   Interesting Historical Facts About WPC

  • Organized in 1939 by 81 founding members called to minister to young persons, faculty, and staff of the University.
  • Sanctuary was dedicated in 1939, the office building behind the Sanctuary built in 1956, and the fellowship hall and library completed in 1966.
  • The Prism building, on the corner of Rugby Road and Gordon Avenue, was purchased by WPC in 1956 and currently is home to the Presbyterian Student Fellowship.
  • A cross was burned on the church lawn in the1950s because of the congregation's stand against racial segregation.
  • Today, the congregation actively stands for the rights of children, women, people with disabilities, varying sexual orientation, minorities and others; it leds and supports efforts to lessen interracial tensions in the Charlottesville community.
  • Westminster helped relocate two Bosnian families to Charlottesville and continues to provide them financial and spiritual support.  
  • Today, WPC boasts 725 members including University and non-UVa-related individuals.
  • Westminster is a member congregation of the Presbyterian Church (USA) and the Presbytery of the James.
