About Journey to Adulthood

Journey to Adulthood is Westminster’s Christian education program for young people in grades 6 - 12.   Journey to Adulthood (or J2A) has two guiding principles: (1) that manhood and womanhood are free gifts from God, and (2) that adulthood must be earned.

The program is divided into three, two-year components:

  • Rite 13 (a name based on a liturgical celebration integral to the program). This part of the program focuses on fun and community building, celebrates the gift of gender, and provides a foundation for the remainder of the program.

  • J2A (Journey to Adulthood) builds on Rite-13 by training young people in six necessary skills of adulthood: Listening, Assertion, Negotiation, Research and Information Management, Partnership, and Leadership. J2A culminates in a week-long spiritual journey, or pilgrimage, in the summer following the second year of the program.
  • YAC (Young Adults in the Church) builds on the previous four years of the program by enabling the young people to practice their newly acquired skills in the context of the supportive community. It includes a week-long mission experience planned and executed by the youth.

In each component, issues of concern to youth on their journey into adulthood are addressed in light of the Gospel.
