“The church should be a ‘both/and’ place: where God’s love and justice are lived; where God is recognized as both present with us yet also beyond our full understanding; where Christians live with both confidence and humility; where faith and learning are complementary rather than competing; where Christ’s life, teachings, cross, and empty tomb inform our lives; and where worship is balanced with service in the world.

Westminster is a community poised to live out this ‘both/and’ discipleship in exciting ways. Being founded as a university church, our location and history enable us to be a place of welcome for students and a permanent faith community for Charlottesville residents. The Presbyterian Campus Ministry of Westminster is congregationally based, so it has the best of both: the on-going, intergenerational stability of a congregation and the vitality and creativity of a student ministry.”

Laura S. Sugg was called to serve as Westminster’s Associate Pastor and Presbyterian Campus Minister for the University of Virginia in 2004 after over 11 years in collegiate ministries at universities and Presbyterian-related colleges. She is responsible for leading worship, preaching once a month, working with two church committees: University Mission (campus ministry) and Mission & Outreach (both local and global social justice work), and assisting Jim Baker with pastoral care to church members. Laura connects with other UVA religious workers through United Ministry, and is an active member of the Presbytery of the James. Her doctorate is in systematic theology with a focus on Celtic Christianity. Laura is adjunct faculty at Columbia Theological Seminary in Atlanta, Georgia where she teaches a Doctor of Ministry class, and she leads retreats and seminars around the country focusing on Celtic Christianity.
